Interview with Art Dubai curator Vipash Purichanont

As the front-running international art fair in the Middle East, Art Dubai 2023 provides a global perspective that thoughtfully challenges and moves outside of the mainstream Western perspective and approach. It successfully implements this strategy by not only showcasing art from MENASA countries (the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) such as Brazil, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Morocco, Nepal, the Philippines, and the UAE, but also by challenging our collective perceptions of what art forms receive the most attention and are deemed the most innovative in contemporary art today. Within Art Dubai’s section entitled ‘Bawwaba: Against Disappearance’, it seeks to elevate highly skilled areas of craftsmanship and artistry that are not usually included under the category of 21st century art forms (and oftentimes were erased, minimised, or appropriated during colonisation) as the digitalization of the art world evolves. I had the opportunity to discuss this fascinating section of Art Dubai with curator Vipash Purichanont as well as learn more about his work, approach, and process: Go to article

The HERstory of Art Museum invites you to the doubleopening of the herstory of art festival RITUALS OF WATER!

Curated by Marta Grabowska // Dates: 3-17 September 2022

Opening: Saturday 3/09/2022
6pm at KIOSK at Rynek Podgórski 8
8pm at KMWTW at Zwierzyniecka 4/20

On the first weekend of September, join us at KMWTW and KIOSK for a double exhibition opening, during which water will carry us to different sides of the discourse about its being through the herstorical RITUALS OF WATER.

Astrida Neimanis, in her seminal essay titled "Hydrofeminism, or becoming a body of water," identifies water as a planetary archive. Did you know that since the beginning of our Earth’s existence, water has neither increased nor decreased in volume? The glass of water you drink today contains stories of dinosaurs, ancient civilizations, celebrations, and wars: everything that was and is, and will be!

Water, our guide and mode of connection, will carry us through various rituals associated with menstruation, birth and motherhood, the passing of time from a planetary point of view, and the perspective of the individual. Fighting the patriarchy, queering our spaces, interspecies equality, taming our traumas, and confronting climate depression are just some of the topics we will cover. It will be ecosexual, feminist, herstorical and experimental!

Artist statement and bio

Born in Richmond, Virginia, US.

Joanna Pottle is a visual artist, researcher, educator, and curator. Her studio practice combines abstract mixed media techniques of painting, printmaking, drawing, and installations and her research includes investigations of public art and space, contemporary art, post-colonial and post-soviet studies, collective memory and shame, (re)negotiation of previously untold or unheard narratives, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, cross-cultural understanding, trauma, healing and peace-building, vulnerability, courage, and empathy. She is graduate of James Madison University, holding a BFA in Studio Art and a BA in Art History with an Art Education track.

“I am a visual storyteller. Or perhaps more accurately, a facilitator of truth telling.

Creating new narratives that put to rest familiar, desperately held onto lies, representing existing truths, and engaging in alternative archival processes to preserve past pains and joys.

Communicating truths and imagination, many times both simultaneously.

Somewhere between real life in all its mundane glory and unapologetic imagination is where we find our truest reality.

This in between is where I reside.

I pursue the in between with the objective of creating a space for active listening, meaningful connection, and transformative healing.

….Dreaming is a form of planning. Gloria Steinman”

Joanna Pottle is 1 of 20 fellows selected for Humanity in Action’s Mapping Inequities Fellowship for 2022!

June 1 – 17, 2022
Visualizing Rights and Rites in the Post-Industrial World: An International Inquiry

The US Fellowship program will consist of a two and half week virtual workshop. A group of 20 American and European Fellows and Senior Fellows will embark on a collaborative investigation and interpretation of spatial data within their respective geographies to illuminate pressing social inequities. These investigations will result in projects that will form an accessible digital exhibition for the public.

Each day, Fellows will spend three hours in virtual sessions and two hours engaged in on-the-ground inquiries and practice. The virtual sessions will consist of lectures from international mapping/data practitioners and academics leading this innovative field. The virtual workshops will also include sessions to learn and critique each other’s projects. The on-the-ground inquiries will involve working in the field, moving away from the computer to explore and generate knowledge and design a project. The projects in the field may be undertaken individually or in small groups if location and technology permit. Fellows choose the community or space that they map, as long as they have access to it geographically or digitally. The purpose of the fieldwork is to produce new data or layer existing data to create a new map.

After the conclusion of the 2.5 week Fellowship, participants will be expected to expand upon their maps and/or share and use their maps in social justice contexts over the next year. Fellows will also be expected to join the Action Lab Series, which convenes monthly from September 2022-February 2023

FB EVENT LINK (po angelsku i po polsku) // EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION

The Exhibition encompasses multiple dimensions of meaning including the use of semantics and language within Joanna’s studio practice, existing as an integrated, yet external perspective, while reflecting her time residing in Poland since Fall of 2019, including throughout the pandemic, and how it has informed her artistic research.

Key themes which have evolved in her work can be comprised within the topic of cultural heritage and how heritage is always constructed, interpreting the present from the past. These ideas include the abstracted visualization of shifting borders, past and present geopolitical contexts, mapping of physical, cultural, and memory-scapes, tangible and intangible heritage, identity and belonging, (re)negotiation of previously untold, unheard, or dissonant narratives, and the individual vs the collective.

In many of her works, she creates what she calls “a new visual language” or “visual alphabet” in which she takes influences of Polish language, physical and cultural landscape, and collective memory with elements of the human form and depicts them through an autobiographical lens. Much of her compositions focus on a moment of intersection and in between, residing in a space of textured ambiguity, vibrant colors, swirling shapes, contoured lines, and layered lived experiences.

This exhibition highlights work completed during Joanna’s grant with the US-Polish Fulbright Commission from 2019-2020, resumed and completed in the Fall of 2021 as well as some periods in between in which her artistic research informed her grant renewal work in 2021.
